Objectives of the Introductory Course to Mine Seismology

© 2026 RockFlow Solutions (Pty) Ltd The introductory mine seismology course is designed to provide mine personnel with a practical understanding of seismic monitoring, data interpretation, and the role of mine seismology in managing seismic and rockburst risk. The objectives of the course are to:
  • Explain the basic methods and technologies used to collect seismic data in a mining environment.
  • Describe common assumptions applied in mine seismology and discuss the limitations arising from these assumptions.
  • Explain seismic network operation and data management principles, and how these influence data quality.
  • Describe commonly used and specialised seismic data analysis tools, including short- and long-term trend analysis, hazard mapping, and large-event back analysis.
  • Introduce methods of seismic hazard quantification.
  • Raise awareness of the complexity of real seismic sources and elastic wave propagation in layered geological media, compared to simplified theoretical models.
  • Demonstrate, through practical case studies, how seismic data analysis contributes to safer mining operations.
  • Assist participants in formulating practical questions related to mine layout, seismic hazard, and support design that can be addressed using seismic information.

Course Format

Courses are offered in the following formats:
  • 1-day short course
  • Standard 3-day course
  • Extended course including assignments, examinations, and project guidance

Topics Covered – Standard Course

DAY 1
Sensors – Seismic Systems – Seismic Data Processing – Source Parameters DAY 2
Sources and Waves – Seismological Tools – Interpretation (Single Events) – Seismicity Parameters DAY 3
Interpretation (Event Groups) – Applications – Procedures – Legal and Regulatory Background Each course concludes with a feedback and review session, allowing participants to evaluate the course content, learning materials, venue, and facilitator effectiveness.

Mine Seismology for Rock Engineers

(10-day course including projects and examinations)
© 2026 RockFlow Solutions (Pty) Ltd This extended course is designed specifically for rock engineering personnel working in seismically active mines. The programme focuses on developing advanced competencies required for effective rockburst risk management. The course includes software practicals, exercises, assignments, and an individual project contributing to the final assessment.

Extended Course Structure

DAY 1 – 6
Seismic Systems – Sources and Waves – Data Processing – Source Parameters – Practical software applications (e.g. Map3D, TRACE, SYNAPSE)
DAY 7 – 10
Data Analysis – Interpretation – Seismicity Parameters – Legal Framework – Engineering Seismology – Advanced applications (e.g. VANTAGE) DAY 11 – 14
Underground Visits – Individual Project Work (3 weeks) – Final Examinations Mine seismology competencies for rock engineers were originally outlined by F. Essrich at the RaSiM6 Conference and continue to form the foundation of applied mine seismology training programmes.
